Happy Earth Day

Why Shopping at the Market is one of the best things you can do for Earth Day.

Earth DudeThis year’s Earth Day is certain to be a grand event because green is going mainstream! Have you noticed? It’s everywhere. Eco-fiber rugs at Target. Bamboo cutting boards at Bed, Bath and Beyond. T-shirts boasting the recycled symbol at Macy’s. Even Clorox has the new Greenworks line of eco-cleaners.
Some question whether this is “green washing,” with lip service to eco-living to sell a products without really doing much to help change things. It can also be looked at as a step in the right direction, at least an acknowledgment and awareness that lifestyles need to change.
Community Market has been on the forefront of that awareness for many years and have been recognized time and again as an environmental leader in the community. Turn to page 6 to see just how eco-awesome we are!
With the rise in popularity of Green Living, our community is blessed to have a truly green-minded business whose board of directors, managers and workers have made a commitment to put the environment first. Community Market has exceptionally high environmental standards. We are extremely conscious about our waste cycle and reduce, reuse and recycle throughout the store.

With the environmental threat of global warming, the green living movement is kicking into high gear. While the wheels of government turn slowly in the direction of change, we the people on a grassroots level, must be the change we wish to see in the world.

Here are some ideas to make positive everyday choices and take eco-action for Earth Day!

Eat Less or No Animal Products-The impact of Animal Agriculture on the environment is becoming more and more widely known. A United Nations report put factory farming of animals as releasing more greenhouse gasses than all the world’s transportation combined. A recent study by the University of Chicago revealed that eating a plant-based or vegan diet is 50 percent more effective at reducing your carbon footprint than switching from a standard car to a hybrid. Not only are you saving land, resources and water, you will be saving lives, the animals and possibly your own!
Use only refillable pens, pencils and ink cartridges- Community Market offers a service to recycle and refill printer ink cartridges called Rapid Refill. Ask any employee about this service.
Recycle your plastic bags. The city of Santa Rosa now recycles plastic bags at the curb! Grocery bags, newspaper bags, produce bags or any plastic bag can be stuffed into one plastic bag and set out with the recycling.Recycle
Dirt In HandsPlant a Garden- It’s springtime, the perfect time to start a garden. Even a small plot or growing some greens in your kitchen is a healthy, green and fun activity. Community Market has lots of organic seeds, herbs and veggie starts to get your garden growing.
Compost Your Veggie Scraps- You can toss your fruit and veggie scraps in the “Yard Cuttings” recycle bin for the city to compost. This saves room at the landfill. They ask for only plant food scraps, no meat or cheese.
Be a CraigsList Queen (or King)- Need something? Instead of running to WalMart, why not try to find it on CraigsList.com. Barter, swap and trade of pre-owned stuff is cheap and oh-so-green! Thrift stores are a treasure chest of everything we all need, you just gotta do some digging. It’s fun! Also try freecycle.org and eBay.com.
Don’t Throw Your Life Away- There is no “away.” All pollution ends up somewhere on our planet home. Stop the “throw away” mentality and be prepared! Always carry with you in your car, bike or backpack:

Sunflower -Cloth Shopping Bags
-Reusable mug for coffee, tea, smoothies etc.
-Tupperware to-go containers and a fork
-A bandana or cloth napkin
-Refillable water bottle

Support Eco-Options- Green Living is all the rage these days, let’s make sure it’s not a passing phase. If you see an eco-option at a “regular” store, thank the management for supporting an environmental option and buy it if you can, but only if you need it, of course!
Get Involved- There are lots of local groups working to green our community and you can get involved by donating money or time for Earth Day and beyond.
