In the 1890’s, Rudolph Diesel designed his engine to run on vegetable oil and tallow. His vision of fuel from sustainable, renewable resources was brushed under the rug by the powerful petroleum fuel industry. Today, with the global threats of war and climate change, Mr. Diesel’s dream is reawakening in the Biofuels movement. Communities are empowering themselves to break from the dependence on big oil by filling up on an array of alternative fuels. One of the most popular is Biodiesel.
Biodiesel is a safer and cleaner burning fuel that can be used in any diesel engine. Unlike fossil fuel, biodiesel is a renewable resource, created in the local community. Some of the environmental benefits are:
- Hydrocarbons are reduced by 95%
- Carbon monoxide is reduced by 43%
- Carbon dioxide is reduced 78%
- Particulate matter is reduced as much as 86%
- Sulfur oxides and sulfates are eliminated by using biodiesel
- Aromatic compounds (mutagenicity compounds) are reduced 75%-90%
Community Market is teaming up with Sonoma County Biodiesel Coop and selling 5 gallon containers of Biodiesel! We are the first Natural Foods Store in Sonoma County (possibly in the nation) to offer Biodiesel to customers.
The Biodiesel we are offering is B100, meaning it is 100% biodiesl and not a blend. It is also not from virgin oil, it is 100% recycled cooking oil.
The fuel is $4 a gallon so $20 per container. Sonoma County Biodiesel members receive a discount. Their price is $18.75 per container. There is a $15 deposit on the container. When you bring it back to be reused, you can trade it for another full container or get your money back. The outside of the container needs to be clean, but don’t rinse out the inside, we will just have to clean it again.
Because it is an ‘experimental’ fuel, the long arm of the law says we have to document who we sell to, so to buy the bio, you need to fill out an application. Then you become a member of the Community Market Biodiesel
Users Group and receive a membership card that you must show each time you purchase the fuel. We have fueling spouts available to buy at $7.99. Community Market wants to help you become free of oil dependence, so fill ‘er up on Biofuel at the Market!
